The thesis explores the linguocultural peculiarities of modern Korean dramas as a significant phenomenon of mass culture that transmits linguistic and cultural values of South Korea. The object of the research is Korean TV series, and the subject is the linguistic and cultural elements represented in drama discourse. The aim is to identify linguocultural concepts, sociocultural codes, and language realities disseminated through Korean dramas.
The first chapter analyzes the theoretical foundations of linguoculturology, in particular the notions of cultural code, cinema discourse, cinema text, and audiovisual translation. Special attention is paid to the methodological framework, which includes elements of qualitative sociolinguistic analysis, cognitive linguistic analysis, as well as discursive and comparative approaches for a deeper understanding and comprehension of linguistic and cultural peculiarities.
The second chapter offers a practical analysis of Korean dramas based on authentic character dialogues. The study examines key cultural concepts (효, 정, 눈치, 한, 우리, 체면), analyzes language etiquette, phenomena such as Konglish, slang, and code-switching, as well as the influence of stereotypes and the popularization of the Korean language. A survey was conducted to identify the most commonly remembered linguistic units among viewers which promote linguistic and cultural immersion.
The results of the study have applied value for teaching Korean, translation studies, intercultural communication, and the analysis of audiovisual genres. The research confirms that Korean dramas function not only as entertainment but also as a means of shaping global viewers’ linguocultural awareness and contribution to the dissemination of Korean linguistic realities.
