The qualification thesis investigates the reproduction of the figurative structure of a prose work of fiction in its Ukrainian translations on the material of García Márquez's novel El coronel no tiene quien le escriba and its 1978 translation by Genevieve Koneeva and Lev Olevsky, as well as Oleksandr Butsenko's 2022 translation. The relevance of the topic is confirmed by the need to specify the terminological apparatus and test models for studying the reproduction of the figurative structure of a work of art in translation. The object of research in this paper is the figurative structure of a prose work of fiction. The subject matter is the ways and means of reproducing the most important components of the figurative structure of a work in two Ukrainian translations. The main purpose of the work is to determine the ways of creating imagery in the original work of fiction, as well as to conduct a comparative translation analysis to determine the ways of conveying the imagery structure and its components in the context of multiple translations. The main methods of research were literary and translation analysis, using the comparative method. The paper proposes a step-by-step model of analysis and tests it on the research material to identify the key images of the novel and to reveal the regularities of reproduction of these images and their components. Successful and unsuccessful ways of reproducing images in translations are analysed. The novelty of the work lies in the first comparative analysis of the reproduction of the figurative structure of the novel El coronel no tiene quien le escriba in its Ukrainian translations, the identification of the main regularities of the transfer of figurative components into Ukrainian, as well as the assessment of the impact of changes and deformations on the reception of the translated text. The practical significance of the work lies in the possibility of using its results in further analyses of the reproduction of the figurative structure of prose fiction, compiling textbooks on translation studies and training future specialists.
