Social media is currently one of the most pressing topics for research. This study establishes that the communicative relationships of social media users are grounded at the pragmatic (motivational) level. Among the pragmatic aspects of communication, it is widely recognised that these include the search for entertainment and information, as well as self-presentation and self-identification, self-actualisation, and attempts to build a career.
However, the issues of online communication, its linguistic aspects, and the interactive construction of the ‘self’ on social media remain relatively under-researched areas of contemporary linguistics, which is precisely why this study is relevant. Thus, this study aims to investigate social media and the interactive construction of the ‘self’.
Consequently, in this study, we analysed 96 pages of well-known blogs on social media platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Using a comprehensive sampling method, 202 examples were examined and described. Having analysed this material, we were able to draw the following conclusions:
Self-presentation online is a conscious linguistic act. Users employ slang, professional jargon and specific styles of speech to signal their affiliation with particular subcultures or to emphasise their expertise.
For self-presentation, social media users employ a variety of linguistic and paralinguistic tools, such as contractions, slang, abbreviations, emojis, and so on.
A digital persona is not an accurate reflection of a real personality, but rather a constructed linguistic project that adapts to the requirements of a specific platform. A user’s linguistic behaviour is largely dictated by platform algorithms, which can both stimulate creative self-expression and provoke polarisation through echo chambers.
