This Bachelor’s thesis explores the development and integration of procedure words as a core part of radio lingo, focusing on their transition from specialized institutional terminology to scripted television dialogue. Originally designed to ensure clarity and brevity in military, aviation and maritime communication, prowords have since entered popular media discourse, where they are recontextualized to fit fictional settings and dramatic scenarios.
Chapter I outlines the historical origins of prowords in Morse code and their codification by international organizations such as ICAO, NATO and ITU. It also highlights the role of phonetic alphabets and communication protocols in standardizing procedural vocabulary across domains. Chapter II presents an empirical analysis of 104 prowords using the TV Corpus, examining their frequency and distribution across domains, decades and genres. Terms with broader operational overlap, such as Over, Roger and Standby, were found to occur most frequently, while highly technical expressions remained rare or absent.
The study applies a corpus-based methodology, combining quantitative data analysis with qualitative interpretation. By tracing the integration of procedural vocabulary into fictional media, this thesis highlights how institutional language evolves when adopted beyond its original communicative settings. It demonstrates that the extent to which prowords enter mainstream usage depends on their cross-domain familiarity, semantic transparency and dramatic potential. Ultimately, the research reveals the ways specialized radio lingo functions not only as a tool for operational efficiency but also as a stylistic resource in contemporary scripted television.
