This bachelor’s thesis focuses on the examination of new lexical coinages in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, aiming to determine their impact and modes of adaptation in everyday life. This research enables the identification of language innovation mechanisms by examining their properties and conducting semantic and structural analyses.
This thesis includes lexical units from Harry Potter series. Throughout the search, they were classified into three categories: magical creatures, magical objects, and magical spells. An analysis of literature, news stories, interviews and Talks at Google, along with sports journalism, indicated that these neologisms exhibit flexibility in their application across various aspects of contemporary life.
A survey was performed among respondents to examine the real-life use of these lexical components. The results indicated that 37% of the participants use or meet such terminology in daily conversation.
In the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling introduces numerous neologisms that have not only enriched the magical world within the books, but also made a lasting impact on popular culture that have transcended their fictional origins, becoming a part of everyday language and influencing the portrayal of magical worlds in other media. Rowling’s inventive use of language, drawing from mythology, etymology, and linguistic creativity, has set a precedent for other authors in the fantasy genre, establishing a rich and enduring linguistic legacy.
This research indicates that the formation and usage of new lexical elements takes place in both formal and informal discourse.
