Bilichenko M.S. Language-mixing and code-switching in English postcolonial literary discourse. – Master’s thesis.
The aim of the master’s thesis was to conduct the investigation of the ways in which bilingual speech is staged in the literary texts through the lens of code-switching and language-mixing and to examine the syntactic patterns of organization of a written bilingual constituent in literature. The relevance was conditioned by the growing interest in multilingual literature and the ways the scientific inquiry into it can deepen our perspective on the internal organization of written and oral bilingualism.
In the first chapter, the notions of bilingualism and bilingual speech phenomena, code-switching, language mixing, were discussed. We analyzed three approaches to the study of code-switching – psychological, sociolinguistic and structural. As a methodological basis for our analysis served the structural approach, in particular the Matrix Language Frame model by Carol Myers-Scotton and structural classification of code-switching by Shana Poplack. The second chapter outlined the analytical framework for the structural and pragmatic investigation of staged code-switching and language mixing in postcolonial literature. The particular attention was given to the nature of written presentation of multilingualism and methods of staging bilingual speech in literature.
In the third chapter the structural classification of code-switching in the illustrative material was presented. The Matrix Language Frame was applied to the noun phrase, verbal complex, intra-clausal, and intra-word switches to test its applicability to the analysis of code-switching in literary discourse. The functions of staged bilingual phenomena in the postcolonial literary works were investigated. In conclusion, staged bilingualism was considered to be a multifaceted phenomenon that integrates structural, pragmatic and stylistic dimensions and exists as an elment of authentic bilingual self-expression.
The thesis contains 132 pages, 1 table, 5 figures, 101 units of theoretical material and 11 units of illustrative material.
