The object of the study is FRIEND/ENEMY opposition in Modern English.
The subject of the research is lexical and semantic features of FRIEND/ENEMY opposition in Modern English.
The methods in the work are following: analysis that includes text searching, comparison, classification, generalization, semantic analysis that focuses on the study of the meaning of words and their relationship, pragmatic analysis that examines the use of language in specific communicative situations, discursive analysis that analyzes linguistic material at the text or discourse level and syntactic analysis that examines the role and relationship of words in a sentence.
The novelty of the study: this work is one of an attempt at the analysis of lexical units that make up the core and periphery in FRIEND/ENEMY opposition as well as the analysis of this opposition from different points of view.
The practical significance of the work includes different aspects, such as literature, as it contributes to a deeper understanding of the plots and emotional aspects of the works; media and politics, as it helps to critically perceive information, to distinguish between manipulative techniques and to understand how this opposition can be used to influence society; cultural and intercultural communication; interpersonal relations, as it promotes the development of emotional intelligence and social skills.
