The qualification paper studies the linguistic representation of gender in contemporary English-language online discourse of opinion articles. The relevance is determined by the growing influence of digital media on the formation of social meanings and identities, and by the insufficient study of gender aspects of language in analytical internet texts.
The aim is to determine the specifics of linguistic gender representation in contemporary English-language online discourse. The objectives are: theoretical approaches to digital discourse and gender in linguistics are outlined, lexical characteristics of gender representation are analysed, stylistic and discursive features of gender-marked language are investigated, and manifestations of implicit gender bias in media texts are identified.
The object is the contemporary English-language online discourse of opinion articles. The subject comprises lexical, stylistic, and discursive means of linguistic gender representation in online media texts. The material encompasses 22 opinion articles in English from British and American online publications (2020–2026).
Research methods include analysis and systematisation of theoretical sources, as well as descriptive and interpretative methods – observation, classification, discourse analysis – which established the link between linguistic forms and their social connotations. The study found that gender features of online discourse manifest not through a clear opposition of “female” and “male” linguistic models, but through the flexible use of language strategies depending on topic, genre, and communicative purpose.
The structure of the paper consists of an introduction, two chapters, a conclusion, and a list of references.
