The present article discusses the school of Slavic Studies in Chernivtsi [Cernăuţi] at the turn-of-the-century and its role in the development of Romanian Slavic Studies. The analysis starts from the premise that in this period the University of Chernivtsi was part of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy's higher-education system, which was visible in the teaching staff, courses, ideas, books, and students. It focuses on the departments of Slavic Studies (comparative philology of Slavic languages, Old Church Slavonic language and literature, East-European history, and Southeast-European history) as well as on the most important professors: Emil Kałužniacki, Eugen Kozak, and Wladimir Milkowicz. It also emphasizes the activity of Ion Nistor (historian of Bukovina and professor at the University of Chernivtsi for a short time) and Silviu Dragomir (slavist and medievalist, student at the University of Chernivtsi).
