The bachelor’s thesis is devoted to the study of agreement and disagreement as
communicative and pragmatic categories in modern English-language media discourse. The relevance of the topic is determined by the fact that these phenomena are not reduced to simple confirmation or denial, but participate in expressing the speaker’s stance, organising interpersonal interaction, maintaining rapport and forming opposition or conflict. The object of the research is communicative interaction in modern English-language media discourse. The subject is the verbal and non-verbal means of expressing agreement and disagreement in television drama and late-night talk show discourse. The aim of the thesis is to study, classify and compare the means of expressing agreement and disagreement on the basis of the miniseries Olive Kitteridge and selected interviews from The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
To achieve this aim, agreement and disagreement are characterised as pragmatic categories, the means of their expression are systematised, disagreement and argument are distinguished, and their verbal and non-verbal realisation in the selected material is analysed. The theoretical framework of the thesis is based on pragmatics, conversational analysis, politeness theory, media linguistics and studies of non-verbal communication. The methodology combines descriptive, conversational-analytical, pragmatic and discourse-analytical approaches, as well as the analysis of non-verbal means.
The general conclusions emphasise that agreement and disagreement are context-dependent interactional categories whose pragmatic meaning depends on genre, communicative situation, speaker relations and non-verbal behaviour. The practical value lies in using the findings in further research on pragmatics, discourse
analysis, media communication and non-verbal interaction.
