This study examines idioms as linguistic and cultural phenomena in American English. The objective of the research is to analyze culturally-specific idioms in American English, focusing on their semantic, pragmatic and sociocultural features and on how they reflect cultural values, historical context, and social practices in contemporary American society.
The research methodology integrates descriptive, comparative, semantic, cognitive and linguocultural approaches to the analysis of idioms. The theoretical foundation for this research is grounded in the works of David Crystal, Adam Makkai, Chitra Fernando, Rosamund Moon, George Lakoff, Mark Johnson, Zoltán Kövecses, Farzad Sharifian, Anna Wierzbicka, Gary B. Palmer and Alexander Potebnja. The lexicographic sources and idiom dictionaries used in the analysis include Oxford English Dictionary, Longman Dictionary of English Idioms, The Free Dictionary by Farlex, Merriam-Webster: America's Most Trusted Dictionary, American Heritage Dictionary of Idioms, McGraw-Hill's essential American idioms dictionary and UsingEnglish.com. Idioms were categorized based on grammatical, semantic, stylistic, etymological and cultural dimensions.
The research indicates that American English idioms are deeply rooted in such aspects of national culture as individualism, pragmatism, the American dream, holidays, sports, politics, food and entertainment. The theoretical novelty of the research includes the comprehensive linguistic, cognitive, cultural and sociolinguistic analysis of idioms and the classification of modern American English idioms.
The significance of the research lies in the applicability of its findings to courses in lexicology, intercultural communication and English language teaching.
