This bachelor’s thesis examines Estuary English as one of the most widespread varieties of modern British English. The relevance of the topic is conditioned by its increasing influence on language norms and its role in shaping new sociolinguistic standards in Great Britain.
The object of the study is the variability of modern English, while the subject is the phonetic, lexical, and sociolinguistic features of Estuary English. The aim of the research is to provide a comprehensive analysis of Estuary English as both a linguistic and social phenomenon. To achieve this aim, the following tasks are set: to determine the origin and position of Estuary English within the system of English varieties; to analyze its main linguistic characteristics; and to investigate its social perception and functioning in contemporary society.
The methodological basis of the study includes descriptive, comparative, and sociolinguistic methods, as well as analysis of scientific sources and observation of language use. These methods made it possible to systematically describe the phenomenon and identify its specific features.
The results show that Estuary English occupies an intermediate position between standard pronunciation and regional dialects, combining features of both. It has been established that this variety is actively spreading due to mass media and social mobility. The study also confirms the trend toward the democratization of language norms in modern British society.
The structure of the thesis includes an introduction, three chapters, conclusions, and a list of references.
