This essay explores Kazuo Ishiguro's novel Klara and the Sun (2021) in the context of technological innovations emerging in the first quarter of the 21st century, with particular attention to the real and imagined risks they pose to individuals and society. Longstanding aspirations to enhance the physical and cognitive capacities of the human body have become increasingly reliant on advances in biochemistry, particularly genetic engineering (as portrayed in Ishiguro's earlier novel of 2005, Never Let Me Go) or have been augmented by AI (as exemplified in Klara and the Sun, which the author describes as a companion work). The relevance of this research lies in the need to conceptualise literary representations of human–non-human interaction through the prism of contemporary epistemological paradigms. This study aims to delineate the variations of human and AI-powered social robot interaction and to identify the literary devices through which such interaction is rendered in the imaginative experiment by the British author. Methods. In addition to general scholarly approaches, the study employs a range of literary methodologies, including reception aesthetics, narratology, comparative analysis, and biographical contextualisation. The analytical framework also draws on the pertinent concepts and terminology from posthumanist theory. Results. The analysis demonstrates that the thematic cluster in Klara and the Sun, which explores the models of human–social robot interaction, is linked with Ishiguro's broader artistic universe and the psychological tension that characterises his fiction. The study emphasises the role of literary tradition in shaping the representations of mutual influence between human and non-human agents. Particular attention is paid to narrative strategies that problematise the nature of such interaction, including the use of retrospective I-narration by an unreliable autodiegetic narrator, focalisation, ellipsis, and the ambiguity of the novel's ending. Conclusions. The redefinition of the "human" and the anthropomorphisation of the robot, as developed within the posthumanist discourse, are represented in Ishiguro's novel in ambivalent and often contradictory ways. On one hand, the narrative contributes to overcoming the so-called Frankenstein complex (a term coined by I. Asimov), fostering a more empathetic perception of artificial beings. On the other hand, the novel warns of the potentially destructive consequences of technological advancement, especially in genetic engineering (referred to as "lifting") and AI. Anticipated risks include increasing social inequality and marginalising those with limited access to technology, rising unemployment, and a general escalation of public discontent and protest. In this context, loneliness – a recurring motif in Ishiguro's work – emerges as a salient consequence of advancing technologisation.Вступ. Розглядається роман Кадзуо Ішіґуро "Клара і Сонце" (Klara and the Sun, 2021) у контексті технологічних новацій і пов'язаних із ними ймовірних (або уявлюваних) ризиків для окремої людини / суспільства. Давні ідеї про покращення організму людини, її фізичних та когнітивних здібностей у ХХІ ст. покладаються на здобутки біохімії, зокрема генної інженерії (про це автор розмірковує у романі 2005 р. "Не відпускай мене") або доповнюються інформаційними ресурсами ШІ (у "творі-супутнику" "Клара і Сонце", за визначенням самого автора). Актуальність дослідження зумовлена потребою концептуалізації літературно-художнього моделювання взаємодії людини–машини крізь призму сучасних світоглядних парадигм. Мета наукової розвідки полягає в оприявненні варіацій міжвидової взаємодії людини та людиноподібної соціальної роботки зі ШІ, визначенні поетикальних засобів її втілення в імажінативному експерименті британського письменника. Методи. У дослідженні використано низку методів літературознавства: рецептивно-естетичний, наратологічний, компаративний, біографічний. Важливими для аналізу є окремі ідеї і термінологічний апарат постгуманізму. Результати. Встановлено, що проблемно-тематичний кластер роману "Клара і Сонце", який покликаний оприявнити моделі взаємодії людини та людиноподібної соціальної роботки, органічно поєднується з універсаліями художнього світу письменника й характерною для його творів психологічною напругою. Окреслено значення літературної традиції у моделюванні взаємовпливів. Визначено специфіку оповідних стратегій як інструменту проблематизації якості взаємодії (ретроспективна Я-оповідь ненадійного автодієгетичного наратора, фокалізація, використання еліпсиcу, смислова багатозначність розв'язки роману тощо). Висновки. Ідеї перевизначення концепту "людина", як і антропоморфізації робота, розроблені в межах постгуманістичної думки, у романі Ішіґуро постають у суперечливості значень. З одного боку, роман сприяє подоланню негативного ставлення до роботів, aka комплекс Франкенштейна (термін А. Азімова), з іншого, застерігає щодо ймовірних деструктивних наслідків упровадження технологій генної інженерії (т. зв. lifting) та розвитку ШІ, зокрема таких, як посилення соціальної нерівності, поглиблення маргіналізації тих, хто не має доступу до технологій, безробіття, врешті зростання суспільного невдоволення і протестних настроїв.
