На початок ХХ ст. – публіцист, редактор та видавець, один з піонерів литовськомовної преси у підросійській Литві. У майбутньому – знакова особистість литовської історії, голова Литовської Тариби, перший демократичний президент Литви (1919–1920), авторитарний лідер країни більшої частини міжвоєнної доби (1926–1940). Хронологічні межі створення умовного «українського циклу» у творчості А. Сметони включають 1908–1913 рр. (у ранній період його публіцистичної діяльності, до початку Першої світової війни). У даній публікації ми ставимо за мету ознайомити український науковий загал зі статтями авторства А. Сметони «Зближаймося з українцями» та «Українці в очах світу», опублікованими у газеті «Viltis», відповідно у № 10 за 1909 р. і № 65 за 1913 р. У нашій роботі вперше буде опубліковано повні тексти обох вищезазначених статей в українському перекладі з литовської, здійсненому нами. В науковий обіг української історичної литуаністики вони вводяться уперше. Дана публікація претендує на роль сегменту подальшого комплексного дослідження історії українсько-литовських відносин ХХ ст., а також історії міжвоєнної Литви. Водночас, таке дослідження вмонтоване в загальну архітектуру більш глобальних історичних балтійських студій в Україні, як одних з перспективних магістральних напрямків відображення зарубіжної історії в сучасній українській історіографії.One of the key enthusiasts and leaders of the rapprochement between the Ukrainian and Lithuanian national movements was Antanas Smetona (1874–1944). In the early 20th century, he was a publicist, editor, and publisher, as well as one of the pioneers of the Lithuanian-language press in Russian-controlled Lithuania. Later, he became a prominent figure in Lithuanian history, serving as the head of the Lithuanian Council (Taryba), the first democratically elected president of Lithuania (1919–1920), and the authoritarian leader of the country for most of the interwar period (1926–1940). The chronological framework of Smetona’s «Ukrainian cycle» in his journalistic works spans the period 1908–1913, corresponding to the early phase of his publicistic activity, preceding the outbreak of World War I. This study aims to introduce the Ukrainian scholarly community to two key articles authored by A. Smetona – «Let Us Draw Closer to the Ukrainians» and «Ukrainians in the Eyes of the World», published in the newspaper «Viltis» in issue No. 10 (1909) and issue No. 65 (1913), respectively. For the first time, this research presents the full texts of both articles in Ukrainian translation from Lithuanian, undertaken by the author of this work. These texts are being introduced into the academic discourse of Ukrainian historical Lithuanian studies for the first time. This publication is intended to serve as a contribution to a broader comprehensive study on the history of Ukrainian-Lithuanian relations in the 20th century, as well as the political and intellectual history of interwar Lithuania.
