To overcome thedependence from the former metropolis, we need to build or restore our social institutions, media (it is desirable that to publish inUkrainian), the trade union movement, religious organizations and others. After the proclamation of independence, most ofinternational experts were skeptical about the independent Ukraine, most dimly imagined where it is situated and predicted for herthe rapid disintegration or new absorption by Russia. But the miner’s strikes in Donbass in 1993 and the peaceful solution of theirproblems showed that Ukraine is going by a different way than the former metropolis. This was confirmed by the peaceful protests ofUkrainians on Independence Square in Kiev in 2004-2005., and the emergence of various public organizations "from the bottom"before, during and after the Orange Revolution. Particularly the Russian Federation is troubling by the very existence of anindependent state of Ukraine. This concern increased after the rejection by the Ukrainian citizens from the russian way ofdevelopment after 2004 and the resumption of dialogue about full membership in the European Union and NATO.The economic problems significantly slowed the development of civil institutions and considerably influenced on thepolitical activity of citizens. But the movement from the former metropolis at the community level occurred much faster than at thepublic one. Of course, the dominance in the informative and cultural space of the russian-speaking and russian by definition productsтwere extremely aggressive, which influenced on the subsequent feeling of inferiority complex among the citizens of Ukraine. Russianstrategists tried hard to deepen the division in Ukrainian society since the historical memory of Eastern and Western parts of Ukraineis different. But in the most difficult moments for the country the social forces of the East and the West of the country were like aunited front in its support, thereby overcoming complexes, which imposed from the imperial centers by centuries. All actions of civildisobedience demonstrated that Ukrainian society is willing to defend their rights, in contrast to Russia, where leaders know better.This demonstration was primarily intended for the internal use, but it appeared that it gave the good information for thought by theinternational community.Keywords: Civil Society, Public Protests, Post-Colonial Development.Олексій ЛіончукСтаттю присвячено питанню розбудови громадянського суспільства в Україні у 1993-2010 рр. Щоб подолати залежність від колишньої метрополії, потрібно вибудувати або відродити власні суспільні інститути, засоби масової інформації (бажано, щоб вони виходили українською мовою), профспілковий рух, релігійні організації тощо. Після проголошення незалежності більшість міжнародних експертів скептично ставилися до незалежної України, вони навіть погано уявляли собі, де вона розташована і прогнозували їй швидкий розпад або ж нове поглинання Росією. Та страйки гірників Донбасу в 1993 р. і мирне вирішення їхніх проблем засвідчили, що Україна йде іншим шляхом, ніж колишняметрополія. Це підтвердили і мирні протести українців на Майдані Незалежності в Києві у 2004-2005 рр., і поява різних громадських об’єднань “знизу” до, під час та після Помаранчевої революції. Російську Федерацію непокоїть сам факт існування незалежної держави Україна. Це занепокоєння збільшилося після відторгнення українськими громадянами російського шляху розвитку після 2004 року та відновлення діалогу щодо повноцінного членства в Європейському Союзі та НАТО.
