Виходець із багатодітної бідної родини, пройшов через битви Другої світової війни, був важко поранений. Після тривалого лікування у госпіталях він вступив на навчання у Київський університет ім. Т.Г. Шевченка. Після закінчення кафедри астрономії фізичного факультету отримав направлення на роботу за обраним фахом астронома в Астрономічну обсерваторію університету. Усе подальше життя Прокіп Миколайович присвятив вивченню фізичних умов в активних сонячних утвореннях – флоккулах, протуберанцях, спалахах. Зі студентських років він бере участь в астрономічних спостереженнях малих планет, фотосфери Сонця, сонячних затемнень, активних сонячних утворень. З початку роботи в обсерваторії долучається до створення горизонтального сонячного телескопа, який стає головним інструментом не тільки для нього, але і для багатьох науковців обсерваторії на довгі роки. За результатами досліджень захищає кандидатську дисертацію. У 70–90-ті рр. ХХ ст. за його ініціативи розпочинаються спільні дослідження фахівців із фізики Сонця обсерваторії Київського університету і Головної астрономічної обсерваторії НАН України з вивчення змін у фотосферних шарах Сонця перед, під час та після спалахів. Спектральні спостереження вели на горизонтальних сонячних телескопах АЦУ-5 (Київ) та АЦУ-26 (Приельбрусся, г. Терскол) у межах міжнародних програм спостережень сонячної активності. Ці дослідження виявились актуальними і тривають донині. Про отримані результати доповідали на багатьох міжнародних наукових конференціях. Вони опубліковані у провідних астрономічних журналах. П.М. Полупан є автором близько 100 наукових робіт, був членом Міжнародної астрономічної спілки.In August 2018, the 100th anniversary of the birth of Prokop Mykolayevych Polupan, who lived and worked at the Astronomical Observatory for more than half a century, is celebrated. He came from a large family of poor families, went through the battles of the Great Patriotic War, after long-term treatment in hospitals, he sought to study at the Kiev University of T.G. Shevchenko. After graduating from the Department of Astronomy at the Faculty of Physics, he received a referral for work on the chosen specialty of the astronomer at the Astronomical Observatory of the University. All further life Prokop Mykolayevych Polupan devoted to the study of physical conditions in active solar formations – flocculates, prominences, flares. From student years he participates in astronomical observations of small planets, solar photosphere, solar eclipses, active solar formations. Since the beginning of work at the Observatory, he has been involved in the creation of a horizontal solar telescope, which becomes the main instrument not only for him, but also for many scientists of the observatory for many years. As a result of research, he protects a candidate's dissertation. In the 70's and 90's of the 20th century, on its initiative, joint investigations of scientist's of the Observatory of Kyiv University and the Main Astronomical Observatory of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine on the study of changes in the photosphere layers of the Sun before, during and after the flares begin. Spectral observations were carried out on the horizontal solar telescopes of the ATSU-5 (Kiev) and the ATSU-26 (Mount Terskol) in the framework of the international solar activity monitoring programs. These studies have become relevant and continue to this day. The results obtained were reported at many international scientific conferences and published in leading astronomical journals.
