The role of his family, studying at Kiev Pedagogical Institute, socio-economic conditions of the historical period have been analyzed. The meaning of family upbringing has been revealed concerning his personality development. Studying at Kiev Pedagogical Institute greatly influenced on the formation of D. L. Serhiyenko's outlook, values and attitudes, determined life orientations and left an imprint on the entire life of the teacher. The impact of socio-economic conditions of the historical period that determined the direction of scientific and educational activities of D. L. Serhiyenko has been analyzed. The socialist way of life, economy focusing on heavy industry, the requirement to connect education and life, propagation of polytechnical principle in education determined D. L. Serhiyenko's direction of acivity that was up to date that period of history - preparing pupils for work in agriculture and industry. At that time D.L. Serhiyenko researched promlems of polytechnic education and socially useful work of pupils in agriculture. Although D.L.Serhiyenko was a prominent representative of Soviet pedagogy, his figure and scientific-pedagogical heritage are interesting and worth of research because it is necessary to explore the history of pedagogical science and seek for actual ideas in his works, which can be used in the training and education of today's youth.У статті проаналізовано, як вплинула родина на формування особистості Д. Л. Сергієнка, зокрема розкрито особливості сімейного виховання. Висвітлено періоди навчання педагога в Київському педагогічному інституті на шкільно-педагогічному відділі, а потім на біологічному факультеті в Київському педагогічному інституті імені О. М. Горького. Доведено, що соціально-економічні умови історичного періоду визначили вектори науково-педагогічної діяльності Д. Л. Сергієнка, а саме дослідження питань політехнічної освіти, трудового виховання і суспільно-корисної праці учнів у сільському господарстві.ukД. Л.
