The role and functions of the autobiographical component of the narrative tool of the work, the way of revealing the author's emotions and experiences, and the subjective nature of the text are highlighted. The connections between Shevchenko's real biography and the vicissitudes and milestones of the protagonist's life reproduced in the text of the novel are traced. The theoretical concepts of Oleksandr Potebnya and Leonid Biletsky became the methodological basis of the research.У статті розглянуто повість Шевченка "Художник" з погляду втілення в її структурі параболи як продуктивної форми художнього узагальнення. Висвітлено роль і функції автобіографічного компоненту наративного інструменту твору, способу виявлення емоцій і переживань автора, суб'єктивної природи тексту. Простежено зв'язки реальної біографії Шевченка з відтвореними у тексті повісті перипетіями і віхами життя головного героя.
