На основі архівних документів розглянуто історію створення цього підрозділу, його взаємодію із місцевими партійними структурами, а також діяльність у сфері атеїстичної пропаганди та виховання. Автор доходить висновку, що цей відділ виконував ідеологічні, а не наукові завдання.The author starts with the question "Was the scientific atheism an academic discipline, some kind of Marxist religious studies, or a cover for party cadres and ideological functionaries, who implemented the Communist antireligious policy and atheistic propaganda?" The author claims that there were different atheistic structures and the true answer to this question can be found out only by studying all of them. The functioning of Ivano-Frankivsk department of scientific atheism of the Philosophy Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the UkrSSR is analyzed in the article. The history of the establishment of the department, its relations with local Communist party structures and activity in the field of atheistic propaganda and education are revealed on the basis of archive materials. The author shows that this department has been established to help local Communist organizations in their ideological and propaganda work. The sociological surveys were conducted to improve atheistic education on the enterprises. The department stuff made atheistic radio programs, examinations of the exhibitions of the local atheistic museum, gave antireligious lectures for workers and members of collective farms (kolhosp), wrote popular brochures and articles in newspapers on atheistic issues. The administration of the Philosophy Institute believed that this department conducted insufficient academic research, but undertook great ideological work. The scientific council of the Philosophy Institute defined the main task of the department as the theoretical development of practical issues – atheistic education, fight against religious and nationalistic survivals and assistance to party organizations in scientific support for atheistic work. Such kind of work became useless in the late Perestroyka when the doubt was cast upon atheism as a part of Communist ideology. That is why this department was shut down, but not reorganized into the department of religious studies as it happened with similar Kiev institution.
