The authors define “social innovations” and explore existing approaches to their classification. The importance of higher education in the development of human capital and the introduction of new social initiatives have been demonstrated. The necessity to carry out deep reforms of the education system and focus on additional missions of universities with a focus on inclusive development, research and entrepreneurship are substantiated. The role of social initiatives in increasing the competitiveness of Ukrainian universities is highlighted.Проаналізовано теоретичні підходи до розуміння сутності категорії "соціальні інновації" в освітньому просторі та показано, яку роль вони відіграють у розвитку людського капіталу. Дано авторське визначення соціальних інновацій і досліджено існуючі підходи до їх класифікації. Доведено значущість вищої освіти в розвитку людського капіталу й упровадженні нових соціальних ініціатив. Обґрунтовано необхідність проведення глибоких реформ системи освіти та фокусування уваги на додаткових місіях університетів з орієнтацією на інклюзивний розвиток, дослідну та підприємницьку діяльність.
