The study of the ethnogenesis of Ukrainians remains a pressing issue in modern Ukrainian studies. Six approaches to the study of Ukrainian ethnic values are identified. The ethnological approach is rightly put in first place. The history of the formation of an ethnic territory on the site of modern Ukraine is considered. It is emphasized that ethnic territories are formed over centuries. One episode from Scythian-ancient history illustrates the process of forming the first ethnic territory within what is now known as the "Ukrainian ethnic territory." The main signs are described as the stench associated with the areas of the singing archaeological culture. According to the conditions, the first historically documented ethnic territory that existed in the Northern Black Sea region in ancient times - the "Scythian square" of Herodotus - was discovered. A comparison of the "Scythian square" with the areas of distribution of the Scythian archaeological culture indicates that the Scythian square is the first "ethnic territory" that belonged to the Scythians.The purpose is using one episode from Scythian-Ancient history to demonstrate the depth of the formation of the first ethnic territory on the territory of modern “Ukrainian ethnic territory”, outline its main features and determine how they are related to the areas of a particular archaeological culture.Conclusions:Information about the “Scythian square” by Herodotus, is the first description of the “Scythian ethnic territory”, which was formed during the Scythian-Persian war on the territory of modern Ukraine.Herodotus provides the first evidence of the heroism of the population on our territory, skythian self-identification and desire not to submit to the invaders.The described “Scythian square” in all respects corresponds to the definition of the concept of “ethnic territory.”Herodotus’ “Scythian square” coincides with the area of the spread of Scythian culture, therefore we can speak about a “Scythian ethnic territory”, the emergence of which can be dated to the second half of the 5th – 4th centuries BC.Using the example of the “Scythian square,” one can see that there are plots from our past that can and even should be used in Ukrainian studies.It is not worth distorting historical facts at the request of modernity and, fighting old fictions, creating new myths. Our history is already rich in glorious traditions and vivid events.But the core of the ethnic territory of the Scythians, from which the finds of the burials of the Scythian elite of the heyday of Scythian culture in the 5th–4th centuries BC. BC, really coincides with the core of the ethnic territory of modern Ukrainians, as evidenced by archaeological data.In the future, on the basis of meticulous scientific study of material culture, through the creation of typological-chronological columns for steppe cultures, as discussed at the beginning of the article, it might be possible to identify those ethno-indicative elements that will allow us to trace the insufficiently studied influence of the nomads of the past on the formation of the Ukrainian ethnos.Актуальність. Актуальним питанням сучасного українознавства залишається вивчення етногенезу українців. Виокремлено шість підходів щодо дослідження українських етнічних цінностей. На перше місце справедливо ставлять етнологічний підхід. На одному з епізодів скіфо-античної історії можна продемонструвати процес  формування першої етнічної території  на теренах сучасної «української етнічної території». Окреслено основні її ознаки та визначено, як вони пов’язані з ареалами певної археологічної культури. Відповідно до умов виявлена перша історично задокументована етнічна територія, що існувала у Північному Причорномор’ї у давнину, – «скіфський квадрат» Геродота. Порівняння «скіфського квадрата» з  ареалами розповсюдження скіфської археологічної культури свідчить про те, що «скіфський квадрат» і є першою «етнічною територією», що належала саме скіфам. Мета – на одному з епізодів скіфо-античної історії продемонструвати глибину формування першої етнічної території на теренах сучасної «української етнічної території», окреслити основні її ознаки та визначити, як вони пов’язані з ареалами певної археологічної культури. Висновки. Інформація про «скіфський квадрат» є першим описом «скіфської етнічної території», яка утворилася під час скіфо-перської війни на території сучасної України. Згадані параграфи твору Геродота є першими, зафіксованими на території сучасної України, свідченнями героїзму населення, самоідентифікації та прагнення не покоритися загарбникам. Описаний «скіфський квадрат» за всіма ознаками відповідає визначенню поняття «етнічна територія». «Скіфський квадрат» Геродота збігається з ареалом розповсюдження скіфської культури, тому можна говорити про «скіфську етнічну територію», виникнення якої можна датувати другою половиною V–IV ст. до н. е. На прикладі «скіфського квадрата» можна переконатися, що у нашому минулому є сюжети, які можна і навіть потрібно використовувати в українознавчих дослідженнях. Не варто перекручувати історичні факти на вимогу сучасності й, борючись із старими вигадками, створювати нові міфи. Наша історія і без цього багата славними традиціями та яскравими подіями. А от ядро етнічної території скіфів, з якого походять знахідки поховань скіфської еліти періоду розквіту скіфської культури V–IV ст. до н. е., дійсно збігається з ядром етнічної території сучасного українства, про що свідчать археологічні дані. Можливо, у майбутньому на базі прискіпливого наукового вивчення матеріальної культури через створення типологічно-хронологічних колонок для степових культур, про що йшлося на початку статті, пощастить визначити ті етноіндикативні елементи, які дадуть можливість простежити недостатньо вивчений вплив кочовиків минулого на формування українського етносу.uk«скіфський квадрат»Геродотскіфипоховальні пам’яткипоселенські структури«скіфська етнічна територія»Стаття
