A detailed characterization of the GIS capabilities in terms of the reforming housing and communal services in the region is given. We highlight the main tasks of the general information processing centers. The current trends in the development of GIS in the developed countries are revealed. We outline the main problems of the implementation of GIS in practice.У статті на основі підходів науковців узагальнено сутність поняття «геоінформаційна система». Подано розгорнуту характеристику можливостей ГІС в умовах реформування житлово-комунального господарства регіону. Виділено основні завдання єдиних інформаційно-розрахункових центрів. Виявлено сучасні тенденції розвитку ГІС у високорозвинених країнах.
