The article examines the specificity of conceptualizing history and its modes of representation, as well as the interpretation of historical references in Charles Dickens's novels "Barnaby Rudge" and "A Tale of Two Cities", and William Makepeace Thackeray's "The History of Henry Esmond" and "Vanity Fair". The aim of the study is to identify the distinctive features of historical representation in these novels. The relevance of the research is determined by the need to explore issues of history, the interaction between history and literature, and the evolution of the historical novel genre within contemporary literary discourse. Methods. The research employs a combined methodological approach that integrates elements of historical-cultural, comparative-historical, and reception-aesthetic methods, along with genre and postmodernist criticism. The analytical strategy also draws on semantic, stylistic, narratological, contextual, intertextual, and textual analysis, incorporating elements of comparative typology. Results. It has been established that Charles Dickens's historical novels are characterized by a balanced correlation between the past and the present, a comprehensive vision of historical and social change, ideas of Victorian progressivism, and the mythologization of history. William Makepeace Thackeray's approach to depicting the historical past is marked by close attention to the social context and the social structure of the period. The distinctive features of his historical fiction include the subjectivity of narration, a focus on individual experience as a form of engaging with history, a deepened psychological realism, skepticism, and the author's ironic stance. Сonclusions. Charles Dickens and William Makepeace Thackeray made a significant contribution to the development of the historical novel. While following the tradition of Walter Scott, both authors enriched it with new artistic features and outlined further directions for the genre's evolution. As Victorian novelists, they interpret history primarily in relation to the pressing issues of the nineteenth century. At the same time, they maintain a balance between the historical period represented and its perception from the privileged vantage point of their own time. The novels under analysis place the process of historical change at the centre of representation. A prominent place within the tradition of the historical novel is occupied by those works that strive for a universal conceptualization of history.Вступ. Аналізується специфіка осмислення історії та способів її репрезентації, інтерпретація історичних референцій у романах Ч. Дікенса "Барнебі Радж", "Повість про двоє міст" та "Історія Генрі Есмонда", "Ярмарок суєти" В.М. Текерея. Мета наукового пошуку полягає у визначенні своєрідності відтворення історії у цих романах. Актуальність дослідження зумовлена потребою вивчення проблем історії, взаємодії історії та літератури, еволюції жанру історичного роману в сучасному літературознавчому дискурсі. Методи. Дослідження здійснене з використанням комбінованого підходу, який поєднує елементи історико-культурного, порівняльно-історичного й рецептивно-естетичного методів, жанрової та постмодерністської критики. Дослідницька стратегія також ґрунтується на методах семантичного, стилістичного, наратологічного, контекстуального, інтертекстуального та текстуального аналізу з елементами порівняльної типології. Результати. Встановлено, що для історичних романів Ч. Дікенса характерні збалансоване співвідношення минулого й теперішнього, комплексне бачення закономірностей та історичних соціальних змін, ідеї вікторіанського прогресивізму, міфологізація історії. Підхід В.М. Текерея до зображення історичного минулого вирізняється увагою до соціального контексту та соціальної структури епохи. Особливостями його історичної романістики є суб'єктивність оповіді, зосередження на індивідуальному досвіді як формі переживання історії, поглиблення художнього психологізму, скептицизм, іронічна позиція автора. Висновки. Ч. Дікенс і В.М. Текерей зробили вагомий внесок у розвиток жанру історичного роману. Наслідуючи традицію Вальтера Скотта, обидва автори доповнюють її новими художніми рисами та намічають подальші шляхи розвитку жанру. Вікторіанські романісти тлумачать історію насамперед у зв'язку з актуальними проблемами ХІХ ст. Водночас, вони встановлюють рівновагу між відтворюваним історичним періодом та його баченням із привілейованої позиції свого часу. Проаналізовані романи ставлять у центр зображення процес історичних змін.
