The article addresses the problem of the synthesis of artistic styles in Ivan Franko's novel "The Great Noise". The writing of this novel – the writer's last major prose work – was influenced by many external (change of epochs) and internal factors (the writer's illness). Therefore, the aim of the article is a detailed analysis of the context of writing and the process of diffusion of different styles. Methods. The general scientific methods of analysis and synthesis, descriptive and comparative methods, as well as the historical-literary method, were used. This enabled the analysis of Franko's works in the context of historical events and socio-cultural processes of the late 19th – early 20th centuries. Results. The specifics of realism and modernism as literary styles are also analyzed, and the process of transition from one style to another in the literary process is emphasized. The change of styles does not happen abruptly, so it is important to trace the penetration of features of one style into another. The study carefully analyzes the views of Franko scholars on the stylistic affiliation of Ivan Franko's works of different periods, as well as the synthesis of realistic and modernist features in his work. Specific examples of the use of realistic and modernist artistic techniques in the work are considered, their functions and influence on the revelation of the ideological and thematic content of the novella are investigated. Particular emphasis is placed on the realistic themes, as well as other features of realism in the work. The characteristic features of modernism as a trend (especially psychologism, reference to the poetics of dreams, eroticism, surrealistic elements, folklorism, and romantic accents) are highlighted, and their presence in the work is explored. Conclusions. The article is an important step in a comprehensive study of Ivan Franko's work as a modernist. A thorough analysis of the synthesis of styles in the novel "The Great Noise" reveals the depth and versatility of Franko's talent as an innovative writer.Вступ. Актуалізовано проблему синтезу мистецьких стилів у повісті Івана Франка "Великий шум". На напи-сання цієї повісті – останнього великого прозового твору письменника – вплинуло чимало зовнішніх (зміна епох) і внутрішніх (хвороба письменника) чинників, тому мета статті – детально проаналізувати контекст написання твору та процес дифузії різних стилів. Методи. Використано загальнонауковий метод аналізу та синтезу, описовий і порівняльний методи. Важ-ливим є застосування історико-літературного методу, що уможливив аналіз творчості І. Франка в контексті історичних подій і соціокультурних процесів кінця ХІХ – початку ХХ ст. Результати. Проаналізовано специфіку реалізму й модернізму як літературних стилів та акцентовано на процесі переходу стилів у літературному процесі. Зміна стилів не відбувається раптово, а тому важливо про-стежити проникнення рис одного стилю в інший. У дослідженні ретельно вивчено погляди франкознавців щодо стильової належності творів І. Франка різних періодів, а також синтезу реалістичних і модерністських рис у його творчості. Розглянуто приклади використання реалістичних і модерністських художніх прийомів, дослі-джено їхні функції і вплив на розкриття ідейно-тематичного змісту повісті. Водночас акцентовано на реаліс-тичній тематиці, а також інших рисах реалізму у творі. Виділено характерні риси модернізму як напряму (зокре-ма психологізм, звернення до поетики сновидінь, еротизм, сюрреалістичні елементи, фольклоризм і романтич-ні акценти), наявні в повісті. Висновки.
