This bachelor’s thesis focuses on the study of media discourse and its influence on the mass consciousness, with an emphasis on the coverage of the war in Ukraine in the British media. The paper analyses the theoretical foundations of understanding the concept of media discourse in linguistic research, as well as its role in shaping public consciousness.
The phenomenon of coverage and representation of war in the modern media is studied, political, stylistic and ideological factors that influence the way media portray conflicts are highlighted. Particular attention is paid to the thematic characteristics of the articles published by the British media, including coverage of military developments, support of the allies, peace-making efforts, and personal stories. A content analysis was conducted for this purpose, examining 96 articles from eight leading British media outlets from January 2024 to March 2025, identifying key thematic trends.
The linguistic features of emotionally loaded journalistic texts are analysed, with an emphasis on the use of loaded language. It is investigated how different types of emotionally loaded words shape public attitudes and emotional reactions to war reporting.
The thesis emphasises the relevance of critical analysis of media discourse as Ukraine continues to counter Russian propaganda and seeks to maintain international support through accurate, convincing, and empathetic media narratives.
